I just wrote out a TCO for a small 12 node network for a law firm today.
The cost of a linux server (hardware and sweat equity) and the domino server
WITH licenses easily comes in several thousand dollars less than a comparable Exchange setup. One of the things that kept them away from SBS, the potential for a limit to the number of users and with the new Open License that MS is imposing on people, they weren't happy at the prospect of buying a full Exchange license in the future.
Basically, they realized their Domino server is powerful enough for their small organization, flexible enough to handle expansion and robust enough to take on mail, calendar and application duties (side note, we cruised the web looking for document management software, but if anyone knows of a good Notes/Domino based law-esque document management software like a DOCs Open or PC Docs [I know, all Hummingbird now], i would appreciate it) as well as a web server.
They were quite pleased that one machine/platform can handle all of that, on Linux (lowering the cost).
The plan is install RH7.3 or 8, drop all services that aren't needed to run the machine, lock it down using the firewalling tools built into linux, install the domino server and have at it.
I can manage the bulk of the system work remotely and my linux Domino server has never crashed on me. (knock wood)
Just wanted to fill you in on the progress
So I'm still on the hunt for the small shop that sees Domino as a good solution and how did you sell them on it?
Thanks for your input
